Protect Your Health: What You Need to Know About Mpox
Mpox is a rare but serious disease caused by the Mpox virus. Since May 2022 over 87,000 human cases have been reported, making Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) as declared by the World Health Organization.
What is Mpox and How Does it Spread?
Mpox is transmitted through close contact with:
- Skin-to-skin or body fluid contact with an infected person or animal.
- Contaminated materials such as clothes or bedding.
With an incubation period that ranges from 2–21 days, and symptoms often appear in two phases:
1. Prodromal Phase (1–5 days):
- Fever
- Headache
- Back pain
- Contagious during this time
2. Skin Eruption Phase:
- Rash or lesions (can be single or multiple)
- Appears after fever subsides
What Should You Do?
If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of Mpox, seek immediate medical advice at your nearest health facility. Early diagnosis and care can help prevent further spread.
